Treasure Island The Panto!
About the Play
Treasure Island is a story by Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson. It is told in the First person accounts of young Jim Hawkins, the son of the proprietors of the Admiral Benbow Inn in Black Hill Cove, England, who finds himself suddenly surrounded by ruthless buccaneers and stories of buried gold. With the help of his friends, Squire Trelawney and Dr. Livesey, Jim sets out on one of greatest adventures of his life. The story was originally serialized in the children’s magazine Young Folks between 1881 to1882 under the title Treasure Island, and The Mutiny of the Hispaniola.
It was First published as a book on November 14, 1883 by Cassell & Co. Treasure Island is traditionally considered a coming-of-age story, and is noted for its atmosphere, characters, and action. It is one of the most frequently dramatized of all novels. Its influence is enormous on popular perceptions of pirates, including such elements as treasure maps marked with an “X”, the Black Spot, tropical islands, buried treasure, and one legged sea faring men bearing parrots on their shoulders.
The tale of Treasure Island was Disney’s first feature length live action movie made in 1950 starring Robert Newton as Long John Silver, a role which defined iconic pirate speak right down to the Arrrrs.. (A classic example of this is found in the Disney movie when Silver, witnessing a burial at sea, exclaims “Arrrmen” at the end of a prayer) There have been many different versions of Treasure Island made over the years, including Muppet Treasure Island (1996) and the animated classic Treasure Planet (2002).
In our version, we’ve given Treasure Island the full panto treatment! We’ve added a few characters that you might not know, and put an extra special touch on the favorites!
